Well, if you're not an Isle of Man worker or a partner (or co-habiting partner) of an Isle of Man worker this will mean you will have to apply for a work permit.
But don't be deterred! It's very quick, simple and easy for your employer to apply for a work permit, especially as you can now apply online. You may even find you could be exempt from the work permit process if you fall into one of the exempt categories.
Don't forget that if you are an Isle of Man worker or a partner (or co-habiting partner) of an Isle of Man worker, you will be eligible for an automatic work permit.
What is a work permit?
If you look up the definition of a work permit, you'll see it's an official document giving a foreigner permission to take a job in a country. So why do you need to apply for a work permit? Here on the Isle of Man, work permits are intended to be used to find skilled workers, grow local businesses and protect employment opportunities.

How do I apply for a work permit?
It is now simple and straightforward to apply for a work permit on the Isle of Man, with the work permit online portal ensuring your application is now processed digitally.
Did you know an application for renewal must be made no less than 28 days before expiry and only costs £60?

Work permit exemptions
Not everyone has to apply for a work permit, as they may fall into an exemptions category. Some of the conditions below may apply to a work permit exemption:
- Employment in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
- Employment in E-Business
- Registered medical practitioners
- Registered dentists
- Secondary school teachers
- Registered nurses or midwives
- Registered social workers
- Senior public service appointments
- Chief Officers of an international group
- Holders of an immigration employment document
- Some temporary employments

Do you qualify for an Automatic Work Permit?
Isle of Man worker's or those who are partners (or co-habiting partners) of an Isle of Man worker's are eligible for an automatic work permit. An application for an automatic permit is made directly to the Work Permit team by the applicant and costs £60. The work permit is issued for one year at a time, so employers don't forget to renew it when it's close to running out.
