Electronic Travel Authorisation to Become Part of Travel to the UK and Crown Dependencies

A new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system has been introduced for visitors travelling to the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, marking a significant update to border processes across the Common Travel Area. The ETA will allow eligible travellers to visit for up to six months for tourism, family visits or a range of short‑term activities.

The ETA forms part of the UK Government’s wider modernisation of its border and security systems. Applications are made online, cost £20, and once approved, the authorisation is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport.

Who Will Need an ETA

Most visitors who do not already hold a visa will require an ETA before travelling. Requirements vary depending on:

  • Nationality
  • Purpose of travel
  • Length of stay

Nationals from Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and several other countries will typically need an ETA rather than a visa. Applications can also be submitted on behalf of family members or travelling companions.

Travellers can check whether they require an ETA or a visa through the official online checker.

Who Is Exempt

Some groups will not need an ETA, including those who hold:

  • A British or Irish passport
  • Existing permission to live, work or study in the UK
  • Certain other immigration statuses that already permit travel

Travelling as a Family or Group

Every individual travelling—including babies and children—must hold their own ETA.
