Breaking Barriers: Mitzi’s Journey in Compliance

Meet Mitzi Danielson-Kaslik, a governance and compliance professional born and raised on the Isle of Man, who has earned international recognition for her contribution to anti-money laundering practice. She is the youngest-ever recipient, and the only awardee from the Island to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award in Anti-Money Laundering from the International Compliance Association. She is also a founding member of the IoD Emerging Leaders programme.

Early Roots and Strong Influences

Mitzi was born and raised on the Isle of Man and, despite travelling extensively, has always considered the Island home.

Her father’s career in financial services sparked her early interest in governance, regulation, and professional services. When the time came to pursue her degree, she chose to study remotely with the Open University, allowing her to remain on the Island while gaining hands-on industry experience.

Before entering financial services at nineteen, she volunteered for a year as an Appropriate Adult with the police. The role required calm communication, sound judgment, and empathy in high-pressure situations, skills that continue to underpin her professional approach today.

A Career in Governance, Risk and Compliance

Mitzi currently works as a Risk, Governance and Compliance Consultant, supporting regulated businesses across a broad range of compliance, governance, and risk matters. Her role is both technical and collaborative: helping clients interpret regulatory requirements and implement proportionate, practical frameworks.

She holds the ICA Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance, reinforcing her belief that effective compliance is not just about rules, but about leadership, culture, and strategy working together to prevent financial crime.

Alongside her professional role, Mitzi is a founding member of the IoD Emerging Leaders programme. Being involved from its inception has given her exposure to board-level thinking, strategic leadership, and the realities of directing organisations in complex regulatory and economic environments.

In recognition of her contribution to financial crime prevention, particularly in relation to risk-based approaches, regulatory engagement, and embedding effective AML/CFT controls, she was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in Anti-Money Laundering by the International Compliance Association.

Life on the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man has evolved significantly in recent years. Douglas being granted city status reflects a growing sense of ambition and forward-thinking development, while still retaining the Island’s close-knit, community-driven culture.

One of the most distinctive aspects of life on the Island is its sense of safety and trust, something increasingly rare and deeply valued. The Island also offers a genuine work-life balance. There is little expectation to work beyond contracted hours, flexibility is respected, and short commutes (Mitzi’s is just a four-minute walk) add meaningful quality to daily life.

She describes the Isle of Man in three words:

Safe. Evolving. Community-driven.

Life Beyond Compliance

Outside of her professional responsibilities and continued academic study, Mitzi maintains an active and creative life.

She regularly attends the gym, participates in ballet classes, and plays the violin. She is also a committee member of the Isle of Man Choral Society, contributing to the Island’s cultural life while developing leadership and organisational skills beyond her core profession.

Community involvement is central to her values. She serves as a committee member for the Diana Princess of Wales Hospice at Home Trust, supporting the governance and strategic oversight of a charity that provides vital care within the local community.

In addition, she is a published fiction author with five books currently in print and a sixth due for release in 2026, balancing a creative career alongside her work in compliance. She also enjoys cooking and spending time with her husband, who relocated to the Island from London.

Opportunity and Advice

The Isle of Man’s strong financial services sector enabled Mitzi to begin her career early and gain practical experience alongside her studies. For her family, the move has offered professional opportunity combined with green spaces, a slower pace of life, and a strong sense of community.

Her advice to anyone considering relocating or building a career on the Island:

“Be open to networking and getting involved. In a smaller jurisdiction, relationships matter, and people are often generous with their time and knowledge. Building genuine connections can open doors to opportunities you may not expect.”

She also recommends visiting first to understand whether the Island suits your lifestyle. It may not be for everyone, but for those it does suit, it can be life-changing.
