Cassie's Story: A New Chapter on the Isle of Man

In August 2022, Cassie and her family made the bold decision to leave behind their life in Derbyshire and begin a new chapter in the Isle of Man.

“It gives us a quality of life and more time together which we just didn’t have in the UK.”

After Cassie secured a role within Manx Care, the move offered not only professional growth but also the opportunity to embrace a more fulfilling way of life. As a family, they discovered a healthier work-life balance, a lifestyle rooted in nature, and a friendly, welcoming community in which to thrive.

From spontaneous coastal walks, sea dips and evenings at the local theatre, to their daughter’s smooth transition into high school and boxing training, not forgetting their dog Jazz’s exploration of Island beaches and trails, the Island quickly became more than just a place to live - it became a place to truly call home.

Cassie’s career in healthcare was a key driver in their relocation decision making. She began her role within Noble’s Hospital as an occupational therapist, and later transitioned into community-based mental health services, where she continues to make a meaningful impact.

Her husband also found employment with Douglas City Council, and together they were soon able to reduce their working hours - giving them an extra day each week to spend together as a couple. “Our employers facilitated our desire to have a better work-life balance, and now we have Mondays off together, and a shorter commute, we have a much better quality of life.” Cassie shared.

A Smooth Transition for Their Daughter

Relocating with their 14-year-old daughter was a major consideration which raised natural concerns. The family prioritised her smooth transition into high school, and thanks to the support of the local secondary school, she has settled in quickly and made new friends. Her passion for boxing found a new home at the Isle of Man Boxing Academy, where she has met new people, developed friendships and even secured a Saturday job - something she hadn’t been able to do back in the UK.

Island Life for the Whole Family

From sea swims in summer followed by a sauna, to winter walks along the beach with a warm brew in hand, Cassie’s family has embraced the Island’s year-round offering. Their dog has become part of the adventure too - with dog-friendly cafés, scenic glens, and coastal paths to explore, Jazz is thriving just as much as her humans! “I think she enjoys the Island and loves the Isle of Man as much as we do.” Cassie laughs.

Living Sustainably and Locally

The Isle of Man’s UNESCO Biosphere status also resonates deeply with Cassie’s family.

They regularly explore nature spots like the Point of Ayre to see seals and wildlife, and they’re passionate about supporting local producers - regularly purchasing grass-fed beef, Manx honey, eggs, and potatoes. “I always talk about the potatoes and people smile, but in all honesty, I've never tasted potatoes like them!” laughs Cassie.

Reflecting on Their Move.

Now settled, Cassie reflects on the safety, serenity, and sense of belonging they’ve found in the Isle of Man. Their daughter enjoys more independence, and the family feels safe and secure in their surroundings - something they didn’t experience as easily in the UK.

“The Isle of Man is promoted as a safe place to live - and I would definitely agree with that! If I was asked to describe the Isle of Man in three words, I would say beautiful, calm and secure.”
