Finding Peace by the Sea: A Pharmacist’s Journey to the Isle of Man

For one young pharmacist, the Isle of Man wasn’t just a place to visit - it became the perfect place to call home. After years of study and training across England, Sarah found herself drawn to the island’s calm pace, coastal charm, and strong sense of community.

From Worcester to the Waves

Born in Worcester, Sarah moved to Bath to complete her Master of Pharmacy degree before undertaking her Pre-Registration year at Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust. But it was during her University summers that the Isle of Man first made an impression.

“I met my partner, who is from the Isle of Man, when I was at University” she explains. “I worked in several community pharmacies in the Island over my summer breaks and got a feel for the lifestyle. It was a lot calmer and that really appealed to me.”

Now, well over a year into Island life, Sarah has embraced the change wholeheartedly.

A Career with Purpose

Currently working as a Rotational Pharmacist with Manx Care, her role is dynamic and patient-focused. “I mainly work on the wards, reviewing patients’ medications and helping with discharges,” she says. “I also collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patient-centred care.”

Her work occasionally takes her into the aseptic unit, where she helps release chemotherapy treatments for oncology patients - a responsibility she takes great pride in.

Despite the demands of her role, she finds the island’s pace a perfect counterbalance. “It’s relaxing after a hard day at work,” she says. “I always leave on time, and due to the short commute, I can easily unwind with a walk or run along the beach once I’m home.”

Island Life, Re-imagined

Sarah adds: “The Isle of Man has offered more than just a job - it’s provided me with a lifestyle. The beach is only a 15-minute walk from our house, which on clear and sunny days, is ideal.”

She enjoys walking her dog and running when the weather allows. Her favourite beach? “The one at the bottom of Dhoon Glen,” she says without hesitation. “Ramsey beach is also a great location to dog walks.”

The relocation process wasn’t without its challenges, but she found support along the way. “It was stressful, as expected, but my costs were refunded promptly, which really helped.”

A Community Like No Other

What sets the Isle of Man apart? “The community is strong, and the scenery is beautiful,” she says. “It’s peaceful and open - there’s space to breathe.”

She also highlights the professional benefits of working with Manx Care. “It’s separate from the NHS, with improved pay and more opportunities for career progression,” she explains. “It’s a really collaborative and supportive work environment.”

Advice for Anyone Considering Relocation to the Isle of Man

Her advice for anyone considering the move? “Explore the whole island before deciding where to live - each area has something different to offer. Also, don’t underestimate the value of a healthy work-life balance, which the Isle of Man offers in abundance.”

As for the island’s best-kept secret? “The Gelatory,” she grins. “It’s a must-visit for Gelato lovers.”
