From Scotland to Silverdale: Ben Holden’s Journey to Island Life

A Career Built on People and Purpose

Born in Perthshire, Scotland, Ben initially trained as a car mechanic and automotive engineer - a field he enjoyed, but quickly realised wasn’t for him. His natural ability to connect with people opened the door to a new direction in sales, where he spent over a decade building trust, developing commercial insight, and sharpening his entrepreneurial instincts.

In 2015, Ben launched a life insurance company, which paved the way for his transition into corporate finance. By 2021 Ben and his business partner and serial entrepreneur, Gordon Cowan, had established Bowmore Corporate in Scotland, a boutique finance house working with global clients - from property developers to sovereign wealth funds - helping them to secure large-scale project financing, through its established network of wholesale finance partners and strategic collaborations with European and international family offices, private equity houses and institutional investors.

Relocating with Family

Ben was keen to invite his family to pay the Island a visit, convinced this was the perfect location for him and his Brazilian wife to raise their three daughters. The family spent 5 wonderful days exploring the Isle of Man and were equally impressed and excited at the prospect of making the Island their new home. Following their relocation in autumn 2022, the family quickly integrated into island life, with the children thriving in local schools and clubs and the arrival of their baby boy in spring 2023.  Ben says, “There’s a strong sense of community here and in my spare time I like to compose, sing and I’m part of a local community band. My eldest is also an accomplished musician, the twins are learning new languages, our youngest has just started nursery and we’re all enjoying a better quality of life.”

Building a Business on the Island

Bowmore Corporate continues to operate globally and the Isle of Man has opened new doors for Ben and his business partner Gordon. The company was thrilled to receive financial support from the Isle of Man Government through its Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS), relocation grants and a reimbursement of 40% on some of its first-year costs. Ben also benefited from Key Employee Treatment and was well-supported by a local business mentor who has helped him navigate the island’s business landscape and make valuable introductions.

Inspired by Ben’s own experience, the entrepreneurial duo are planning to launch a new consultancy - Pelagos PrimeTech. Named after the Greek word for “Sea,” Pelagos PrimeTech will help other entrepreneurs looking to start or move a business to the Isle of Man, offering hands-on guidance through every step of the process. Life Beyond the Office

Outside of work, Ben enjoys a 5 minute commute to work, allowing him to see more of his family, and embrace the island’s outdoor lifestyle. Since relocation, he’s joined a shooting club, enjoys the odd round of golf at Castletown Links, and makes the most of the wonderful beaches and coastlines, paddleboarding and sea swimming at Port Erin and Gansey with family. A passionate musician, Ben also sings and composes in his spare time, and he and the family love to spend time exploring Silverdale Glen and South Barrule with their miniature golden doodle “Brooke”.

A Better Balance

Compared to life in the UK, Ben finds the Isle of Man has vastly improved his work-life balance. “The pace is slower, the commute is many miles shorter, and the opportunities are vast! Most importantly, I get to be more present, and spend more time with my family,” he says. “The Isle of Man has given us the quality of life we were always looking for.”

Advice for Future Relocators

Ben’s advice to entrepreneurs considering the Isle of Man?

“Go for it – you’ll never look back. So many people I’ve met since moving, have said they came to the Island for a couple of weeks and are still here 20+ years later. I’d encourage anyone keen to find out more, to reach out to the Locate Isle of Man team, and simply come and visit the Island to touch, see, and smell the place for yourself. You won’t regret it!”

He also encourages business owners and entrepreneurs to explore the array of government support available, and not to overthink the move. “There’s so much opportunity here if you’re willing to look for it and put the time in. The Island is very much open for business and the business community is incredibly supportive and collaborative.”

Final Thoughts

His story is a testament to the Island’s appeal - not just as a business destination, but as a place to build a life and thrive! His commitment to the Island is both personal and purposeful, rooted in a desire to give back to the community that welcomed his family and business with open arms.

From sponsoring the Hero of Mann Awards to considering the introduction of a new charity to help under privileged children in the Island, we have no doubt that Ben and his family will continue to enjoy their enriched way of life for many years to come.

Ben sums up the Isle of Man in three words:

Safe. Community. & Opportunity.
