At just 19 years old, a move from the busy city of Nottingham to the tranquil shores of the Isle of Man might seem like a bold leap - but for one young professional, it was the beginning of a fulfilling new chapter.
Originally from Nottingham in the UK, Sam made the decision to relocate to the Isle of Man in September 2021, inspired by both his family and the many career opportunities the Island offered. “My parents and twin brother had moved to the Island a year before me,” he explains. “I had commitments in the UK to complete, but once those were done, I had no doubts that I wanted to join them and start a new adventure.”
What drew Sam to the Isle of Man? Safety, security, and the chance to live in the countryside - all wrapped in a community that’s as welcoming as it is picturesque. “The Island is incredibly friendly, safe, and known throughout the world as the motor biking and road racing capital,” he says.
Now, just a few years later, Sam is thriving in a high-profile role as Private Secretary to the Chief Minister. “I’ve been doing this for the last three and a half years and I absolutely love my job,” he says. “It gives me so many opportunities - from managing the Chief Minister’s calendar and correspondence, to drafting parliamentary questions and organising functions throughout the year.”
Sam’s GEF 30 Under 30 Win
Sam was named a winner in the Collaboration category of the GEF 30 Under 30 Awards organised and run by Media Isle of Man, which celebrates young change-makers across the Isle of Man who are making waves in business, culture, and community life. Sam was recognised for his standout work connecting people and ideas across government and community.
“Collaboration is at the heart of everything I do,” Sam says. From supporting ministers to organising public events, his role has always been about bringing people together.
The award, backed by Robinson’s Food Hall, highlights Sam’s journey from TT fan to trusted advisor - and how quickly he’s made an impact since moving to the Island in 2021. “It was humbling to be recognised,” he adds. “It shows what’s possible when you’re part of a community that values teamwork and public service.”
The Isle of Man has proven to be the perfect fit for Sam’s career ambitions. “It gave me the opportunity to get into a field I’m truly passionate about, building on my previous experience campaigning in the UK - It’s something I thoroughly enjoy.”
But life on the Island isn’t just about work. The short commute, which for Sam is now a 10-minute stroll instead of a 45-minute drive in heavy traffic - has transformed his work-life balance. “It’s made a huge difference,” he notes.
In his spare time, Sam enjoys walking the family dog along the beach in Glen Maye, fishing in Peel harbour, and experimenting with vegetable gardening. “I’m trying to grow vegetables for the first time this year, albeit some with limited success!” he laughs. Sam also has a large LEGO collection that keeps his creative side engaged.
Relocating was smooth, thanks to the support of his family. “I was fortunate enough to move in with my parents straight away, before buying my own property around 18 months later,” he says.
One of the Island’s best-kept secrets, Sam believes, is its uniqueness. “It’s not a clone town - there’s generally only one of each UK chain shop, and the Island’s community really loves to support local businesses.”
The opportunities have been abundant. “Living here has given me a great career to date, and a lifestyle that I wouldn’t have thought possible had I remained in the UK,” he says. “For my family, it’s meant countryside living in retirement, and for my brother, a motorbike racer, it has brought him closer to his passion for motorsport – a win-win for everyone.”
Sam’s advice to others considering the move?
“I’d recommend coming over to the Island for a look around and if you fall in love with it like I did, then go for it! Everyone is so helpful and there are lots of opportunities and benefits to living on an Island like ours.”
Sam’s top tip for newly relocated residents:
“Take the time to explore the different areas of the Island- there’s so much to uncover and enjoy!”
