Top 5 things to remember when buying a home in the Isle of Man

Trying to find somewhere to live in the Isle of Man and not sure where to begin? Our top 5 things to remember will help guide you through buying your dream home in the Isle of Man. Whether you're looking for a cottage by the sea in Peel, or a townhouse in bustling Douglas, you're sure to find the perfect place to call 'home' in the Isle of Man.

1) Figure out your budget

The average house price in the Isle of Man is £313,036. Property purchasers will find a diverse range of properties available including apartments, bungalows, traditional terraced, semi and detached houses as well as quaint cottages and large premium country and coastal properties. So don't worry if your budget is in the lower or higher figures, as you will be sure to find the right property for you and your family.

 2) Location, Location, Location

Location is everything and you want to make sure you choose the right town or village for you. On the east coast, you'll find Douglas, Laxey and Onchan, which are the largest residential areas on the Island with short commute times and regular public transport. You'll find the south boasts some of the best beaches and scenic spots around the old fishing towns of Port Erin, Port St Mary and Castletown. The growing town of Peel on the west coast of the Island boasts some of the most idyllic sunsets and new contemporary style housing estates properties on offer. In the north of the Island there are smaller villages outside of the town of Ramsey, such as Kirk Michael, Jurby, Andreas and Bride, which are perfect if you enjoy the quieter life.

3) Local estate agents

Worried you won't find the property you had in mind? With many estate agents based in the Isle of Man and the number of house sales at over 900 a year, the Island's local estate agents are here to help you on your relocation journey and want to make sure you find your dream home. The Isle of Man uses the same 1979 Estate Agents legislative act as the UK, so if you've bought a house in the UK previously the system works the same here too!

4) Take the scenic route home

At 33 miles long and 13 miles wide, here on the Isle of Man you'll find the average commute time is about 20 minutes. So you won't have to worry when it comes to the distance from your new home to the kid's school or to your new place of work. Many locals walk or cycle to work and enjoy the active lifestyle the Island has to offer.

5) Prepare for moving day

With your moving day edging ever closer, don't forget to organise dates with your removal company and to book your car and family onto the Steam Packet boat. You can choose from over 10 experienced on-Island removal companies to assist you on your move to the Isle of Man, which can take some of the moving day stresses away. You can then book yourself and the family a cabin on the Ben-My-Chree ferry to put your feet up and plan your future adventures on the Isle of Man.
