Paramedic to Practitioner: Building a Career in the Isle of Man

Originally from Cradley near Dudley, Quinn made the leap to the Isle of Man just under three years ago, inspired by a friend’s love for the TT and a desire for a quieter, more fulfilling way of life. “I relocated for better career opportunities and a better quality of life,” he shares, and it’s clear that the Island has delivered on both fronts.

Paramedic to Practitioner: Building a Career in the Isle of Man

Now a Trainee Specialist Practitioner with the Isle of Man Ambulance Service within Manx Care, Quinn’s career has been on a steady upward trajectory. Starting as a Patient Transport Apprentice at 18, he qualified as a Paramedic in 2019 and moved to the Isle of Man in 2022. Supported by the Ambulance Service, he’s currently studying with Cumbria University to become a Specialist Practitioner - a role that reflects both his dedication and the Island’s investment in healthcare talent.

“The Isle of Man offers a great place to work in pre-hospital care,” Quinn says. “The smaller service creates a friendly working environment, and being surrounded by nature every day is literally a breath of fresh air.”

A New Chapter in the Isle of Man

Quinn initially relocated to the Island on his own with just his dog by his side, embracing the adventure of a fresh start. Not long after settling in, he met his now fiancée - adding a personal chapter to a journey that began with career ambition.

Quinn added “Relocating wasn’t without its challenges which we did anticipate. For example, finding pet-friendly rental accommodation proved tricky, but the rewards have absolutely been worth the effort. My salary is also higher here, which has been a big help, and has allowed us to purchase our very first home”. For Quinn, the Isle of Man is not only safe, it’s also friendly and welcoming – all attributes he believes make it the ideal location for those considering a move.

“What has surprised us the most is how friendly and accommodating everyone has been. Moving over on my own was quite daunting, however the people and community here have made us feel so comfortable – so much so, we felt right at home!”

Outside of Work

Quinn enjoys walking his dog through the Island’s glens and beaches and indulging in a spot of fishing when time allows.

Fishing was a new hobby for me,” he says. “I also enjoy getting out and about to explore the local beaches and nature and finding great places to go camping with my fiancé and our dog.”

Among the many scenic spots, there’s one that stands out in particular:

“One of my favourite places is a little tucked away beach in Port Cornaa,” Quinn shares. “It was one of the first places I went to when I first moved over to the Island and I love it - so quiet and secluded, just so peaceful.”

His Advice?

“Take the first step, and just do it! Do you research, find somewhere to live, and jump in with both feet.” And if you’re a bike enthusiast, he adds with a grin, “Don’t forget that the Isle of Man is home to the famous TT Races, Southern 100 and the Manx Grand Prix!”

Three words to sum up the Isle of Man?

Happy. Beautiful. Peaceful.
