A New Chapter for Matt, Medicines Management Technician

After 15 years in Gloucester, where he built a solid career in pharmacy, a Senior Medicines Management Technician has taken a bold leap - relocating to the Isle of Man in search of a slower pace, a richer culture, and a fresh professional challenge.

Advice for Future Islanders

For those considering a move, he offers practical advice: “Visit first to get a feel for the place. Check bus routes if you don’t have a car and don’t call the UK ‘the mainland’ - that’s a local ‘faux pas’.”

Matt also highlights the importance of being prepared for the housing market and the limited availability of pet-friendly rentals, however he added:

“If you’re looking for a place that’s friendly, cultured and scenic, and you’re looking for a better work-life balance, the Isle of Man is a great choice.”

A New Adventure Begins

Born and raised in Southport, Matt spent the last decade and a half in Gloucester, after moving there to attend University. As Matt approached his forties, the call for change grew louder. “I felt like it was time to move on from somewhere I didn’t have any specific roots in,” he explains.

“I wanted a change of scenery and pace, and the Isle of Man offered both.”

Now well into his first year of Island life, Matt is settling into his new role at Manx Care where he works as a Senior Medicines Management Technician. His journey in pharmacy began with a studentship at Gloucester Royal Hospital, followed by years of experience in medicines management, accuracy checking, and procurement. “I spent approximately 14 years within that trust before making a move to the Isle of Man,” he says.

His wife Rosie, a Community Mental Health Nurse, joined Manx Care on the same day at Matt. “We started our healthcare journeys together,” he smiles. The couple currently live in a studio flat while house-hunting and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their two cats and dog.

Life and Work in the island

The Isle of Man has already made a very strong impression. “It’s friendly, scenic, and reminds me of rural parts of the UK - like the Lake District or coastal Wales,” he says. “The culture and history are unique, and the self-governing nature of the island gives it a distinct identity.”

Professionally, the move has opened new doors. “There’s room to grow and learn new skills,” he notes. “While networking with UK pharmacies is a bit more challenging, the wage is competitive, and the Government’s relocation support made the move possible.”

Exploring Island Life

Outside of work, Matt and Rosie enjoy hiking and walking their dog, often exploring the Island’s coastline and glens. A history enthusiast, Matt loves to dive into books on the Isle of Man’s history and culture, and is hoping to take up fishing - a hobby well-suited to island life.

Matt and Rosie’s work-life balance has definitely improved. “It’s a lot different, and better than the UK as we have more time in the evenings and at weekends,” he says, though he notes some logistical challenges. “I sometimes rely on the bus, and I think a direct stop at Nobles Hospital from Ramsey would be a great addition.”

Settling In and Looking Ahead

Relocating has been a largely positive experience, though finding the right home has proven tricky. “I’m being a bit picky - I want something different from what I had before,” he admits.

He’s also discovered some of the island’s hidden gems.

“The Manx heritage transport is a real treat. It’s a slower-paced, scenic way to travel and a fun way to get around.”

Three Words to Sum up the Isle of Man?

“Friendly. Cultured. Scenic.”
