A Class 1 Driver is responsible for operating heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 7.5 tonnes, typically articulated lorries, for transporting goods over long or short distances. This role requires ensuring the safe, timely delivery of cargo, conducting vehicle checks, adhering to traffic laws and regulations, maintaining accurate delivery records, and occasionally assisting with loading and unloading. A surface dressing machine and plant operator works in road maintenance, applying surface dressing treatments to extend road life and improve safety. This involves setting up and operating machinery like bitumen sprayers, chip spreaders, and rollers, following safety procedures, working closely with team members, and conducting basic maintenance on the equipment.
The skills required for both roles include strong spatial awareness, attention to detail, good communication, teamwork, and problem-solving ability. A Class 1 Driver must have excellent driving skills, knowledge of vehicle mechanics, and a strong understanding of road safety and transport regulations. A surface dressing machine operator must be proficient with machinery, able to interpret technical instructions, and capable of working efficiently in outdoor environments under varying conditions.
Experience required includes holding a valid HGV Class 1 Licence and a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for driving roles. For surface dressing operators, prior experience in road construction or maintenance, familiarity with surface treatment processes, and certifications related to plant operation (e.g. NPORS or CPCS) are often necessary. Both roles benefit from a track record of reliability, safety awareness, and adaptability to changing work conditions.
