A fitter/mechanic for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) and surface dressing plant is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of large commercial vehicles and specialist road maintenance equipment. This includes diagnosing mechanical faults, performing scheduled servicing, and conducting emergency repairs to ensure vehicles and plant machinery remain operational, safe, and compliant with relevant regulations. The role often involves working in both workshop and field environments, sometimes under pressure to minimize downtime.
To be effective in this role, the individual needs strong mechanical aptitude, familiarity with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, and the ability to use diagnostic tools and read technical manuals. Good problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a practical, hands-on approach are essential. Welding and fabrication experience is often valuable, especially for older or specialized equipment.
Experience working with HGVs, road surfacing machinery, or similar plant equipment is typically required. This includes a solid understanding of vehicle inspection standards, VOSA requirements, and health and safety practices. Prior work in a fast-paced or field-based maintenance environment is often advantageous.
