A Chip Seal Operative, also known as a Surface Dressing Operative, is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and resurfacing of roads using the chip seal method, which involves applying a layer of bitumen. The role requires a strong understanding of road construction techniques, safe handling of materials, and operating machinery such as bitumen sprayers. Responsibilities include preparing the worksite, ensuring all materials are applied evenly and efficiently, monitoring traffic management measures, and carrying out post-application inspections to ensure quality and durability. The operative must be vigilant about health and safety procedures and environmental regulations throughout the process.
Essential skills include physical stamina, attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to follow instructions accurately in a fast-paced, outdoor environment. Operatives must also have good communication skills to coordinate with crew members and supervisors.
