A Lorry Driver and Micro Asphalt Labourer working in road maintenance and surfacing roles is responsible for safely operating heavy goods vehicles to transport materials, machinery, and equipment to and from various job sites. The role requires conducting daily vehicle inspections, ensuring loads are safely secured, and keeping accurate delivery records while adhering to transport legislation. When not driving, the individual is expected to assist on-site with tasks such as setting up traffic control measures or helping the surfacing crew. This dual-function position also involves supporting micro asphalt surfacing operations, which includes preparing road surfaces, cleaning and edging, applying micro asphalt using machinery and hand tools, and maintaining the cleanliness and operability of all equipment used on site. Safety is a critical aspect of the role, and the worker must follow strict health and safety procedures and cooperate with team members to ensure a safe and productive work environment.

The skills required for this position include proficiency in driving and manoeuvring large vehicles, a solid understanding of transport and road traffic regulations, and the ability to work well within a team. The individual must also demonstrate good physical fitness and endurance due to the manual nature of the labour involved in micro asphalt surfacing. Effective communication, a basic understanding of vehicle mechanics, and a commitment to maintaining safety standards are essential traits for success in this role.

In terms of experience, the lorry driver must hold a valid HGV license (typically Class 2 or above) along with a Driver CPC qualification. While previous experience in road surfacing, construction, or highway maintenance is advantageous, it is not strictly necessary as training can be provided. Possession of a CSCS card or similar health and safety certification may be required, and any familiarity with micro asphalt application or operating related machinery would be considered beneficial. The role often involves early starts, long shifts, and travel to various locations, so flexibility and reliability are also important.
