Interim Executive Support and Governance Officer

The Interim Governance and Corporate Services Officer will provide high-level administrative, governance and executive support to the Chief Executive/Clerk of a local Commissioners during a period of sickness cover. The role is intended to ensure continuity of corporate governance, policy development and senior administrative functions, and requires someone capable of operating with a high degree of autonomy and discretion.

The postholder will support the Chief Executive/Clerk in fulfilling statutory and corporate governance responsibilities, including the preparation and review of policies, procedures and governance documentation. They will assist in the coordination of committee and board processes, which will include preparing agendas, managing documentation and ensuring that actions are recorded and followed through appropriately. The role also involves overseeing complex administrative activity across the organisation and ensuring that internal processes are maintained to a high standard.

In addition, the Interim Governance and Corporate Services Officer may provide line management support and assist in coordinating staff activities where required. The role will also involve working with financial and budgetary information and supporting basic accountancy-related processes where necessary, although formal accountancy experience is desirable rather than essential.

The postholder will be expected to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, internal policies and recognised standards of good governance within a local authority context. They will act as a key point of contact for internal teams and external stakeholders in relation to governance and corporate services matters, and will be expected to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion at all times.

The ideal candidate will have experience in corporate governance, senior administrative roles or executive support functions, along with experience in drafting formal policies, reports and governance documents. Strong organisational and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently. Experience of line management and familiarity with local government or public sector environments would be advantageous.
