Work Permit FAQs

Q) How much does a permit cost, and who has to pay for it?

A) A single fee of £60 is payable on submission of an application and can last up to 5 years. The fee has to be paid for by the employer.

Q) How long does a permit take to process?

A) 86% of all fully completed applications submitted by employers are now processed the same or the next working day, meaning you won't be waiting long for that confirmation email!

Q) I am from or the UK or Ireland thinking of moving to the Island; do I need a work permit?

A) If you are from the common travel area (UK and Ireland) wishing to take up employment you must obtain a work permit, unless you are an Isle of Man worker or exempt.

Q) Am I exempt from applying for a work permit?

A) With skill shortages and certain occupations in demand, the Department for Enterprise has created a list of exemptions for work permits.

Q) I am hoping for a change of job with my current employer. Do they need to apply for a new work permit?

A) An employee may not take up a different job with the same employer without a new work permit. Ensure your employer applies for your new work permit.

Q) English is not my first language. Will I be refused a work permit?

A) No, not at all. Your ability to speak English is something that the work permit team may have to take into account when considering your application depending on the job role. But don't worry, not speaking English as your first language is not a sufficient reason for refusing to grant a permit.
